What is BNB Smart Chain
What is BNB Smart Chain
BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain network that uses the Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus mechanism. Originally launched by Binance in 2020 as "Binance Smart Chain," it was rebranded to BNB Smart Chain in 2022 as part of the broader BNB Chain ecosystem. BSC is designed for high throughput and low transaction costs while maintaining compatibility with Ethereum tooling and smart contracts.
In short: BNB Smart Chain is a fast, low-cost, EVM-compatible L1 blockchain. In DecAIHub, it appears in the Main chain field for projects that deploy their smart contracts and tokens on the BSC network.
How BNB Smart Chain works
BNB Smart Chain operates as a standalone Layer 1 blockchain with its own validator set and consensus mechanism, while maintaining EVM compatibility so that developers can deploy Ethereum-compatible smart contracts with minimal changes.
Consensus: Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA)
BSC uses PoSA, a hybrid consensus mechanism that combines elements of Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) and Proof of Authority (PoA):
- Limited validator set. BSC operates with a fixed set of active validators (approximately 40 active validators, with additional candidates). This is significantly fewer than Ethereum's hundreds of thousands of validators, which enables faster block times but concentrates block production among fewer participants.
- Staking requirement. Validators must stake BNB tokens to participate, providing economic incentive to behave honestly. Validators can be slashed (lose staked tokens) for malicious behavior.
- Authority component. Validators are elected based on their staked amount and community delegation, creating a semi-permissioned system where not anyone can become a validator simply by running a node.
- Block time. BSC produces blocks approximately every 3 seconds, significantly faster than Ethereum's approximately 12-second block time.
The PoSA design represents a deliberate trade-off: faster and cheaper transactions in exchange for a more centralized validator set compared to networks like Ethereum. This trade-off is relevant context when evaluating projects that deploy on BSC.
EVM compatibility
BSC runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, which means:
- Smart contracts written in Solidity or Vyper for Ethereum can usually be deployed on BSC with minimal changes (compatibility does not guarantee identical behavior, so a contract should be tested on the target chain before deployment with real funds).
- Developer tools built for Ethereum (Hardhat, Foundry, Remix, MetaMask) work with BSC by changing the network endpoint.
- Token standards like ERC-20 work on BSC, though they are sometimes referred to as BEP-20 to indicate the BSC-specific implementation of the same standard.
- Applications and smart contracts are interoperable in structure with other EVM-compatible chains such as Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum One, Avalanche C-Chain, and Polygon.
BNB ecosystem architecture
BNB Smart Chain is part of the broader BNB Chain ecosystem, which includes:
- BNB Beacon Chain (formerly Binance Chain) — originally used for governance and staking, scheduled for sunset as its functions migrate to BSC.
- BNB Smart Chain — the primary execution layer for smart contracts and dApps.
- opBNB — a Layer 2 built on BSC using the Optimism OP Stack, designed for even lower fees and higher throughput.
- BNB Greenfield — a decentralized data storage network in the BNB ecosystem.
For DecAIHub purposes, when a project card lists Main chain: BNB Smart Chain, it refers specifically to the smart contract execution layer — BSC itself.
Where BNB Smart Chain appears in DecAIHub
- Main chain field —
BNB Smart Chainindicates that the project deploys smart contracts, tokens, or on-chain logic on the BSC network. - Token standard field — projects on BSC typically use the BEP-20 standard, which is functionally equivalent to ERC-20.
- Type field — projects deployed on BSC typically have
Type: EVM(BSC uses an EVM-compatible execution environment).
When you see Main chain: BNB Smart Chain in a project card, it tells you:
- The project operates on a high-throughput, low-cost, EVM-compatible chain.
- Transaction verification happens through a relatively small validator set using PoSA consensus.
- The project has access to the BSC ecosystem's liquidity, tooling, and user base.
- Smart contracts can be inspected through BscScan, the BSC block explorer.
The chain field tells you where the project deploys its contracts. It does not tell you whether the project's AI claims are verified (AI reality), whether the token serves a genuine purpose (Token necessity), or whether the onchain component is meaningful (Onchain necessity). Those assessments are handled separately by the corresponding DecAIHub evaluation axes.

What BNB Smart Chain alone does not prove
- Deploying on BSC does not prove the project is secure or well-audited. BSC provides infrastructure; smart contract security is the project's responsibility.
- Using BSC's low fees does not prove the project has meaningful on-chain activity or satisfies Onchain necessity. Low transaction costs make it inexpensive to deploy contracts with minimal usage.
- Being on an EVM-compatible chain does not prove the smart contracts are correctly implemented. Compatibility means the same language and tooling, not automatic correctness.
- BSC's high throughput does not prove the project needs that throughput. Many projects deploy on BSC for ecosystem access or low costs, not because their use case requires high transaction volume.
- Operating on the BNB ecosystem does not prove the project is endorsed by or affiliated with Binance. BSC is a public, permissionless blockchain.
Do not confuse with
- BNB (token) — the native token of the BNB ecosystem, used for gas fees on BSC and other purposes. BNB is a token; BNB Smart Chain is the network.
- Binance (exchange) — the centralized cryptocurrency exchange. BSC is a separate, public blockchain network. While Binance initiated BSC's development, the network operates independently as a public chain.
- BNB Beacon Chain — the older chain in the BNB ecosystem originally used for governance and staking. Not the same as BSC.
- opBNB — a Layer 2 built on top of BSC for additional scalability. A different network layer than BSC itself.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between BEP-20 and ERC-20?
BEP-20 is functionally equivalent to ERC-20 — it follows the same interface and token standard. The difference is the network: ERC-20 tokens run on Ethereum, BEP-20 tokens run on BNB Smart Chain. Because BSC is EVM-compatible, the underlying smart contract code is identical or nearly identical. The naming distinction exists to indicate which network the token lives on.
Is BNB Smart Chain decentralized?
BSC uses a limited validator set (~40 active validators), which is significantly more centralized than Ethereum's hundreds of thousands of validators. The PoSA consensus mechanism deliberately trades decentralization for throughput and cost efficiency. Whether this level of decentralization is sufficient depends on the use case and the user's requirements. DecAIHub records this as a factual property, not a quality judgment.
Why do some AI projects choose BSC over Ethereum?
Common reasons include lower transaction fees (important for high-frequency on-chain operations), faster block times (useful for real-time applications), and access to BSC's large user base and liquidity. The trade-off is a more centralized validator set and different security assumptions compared to Ethereum. The choice of network is a project-level decision that DecAIHub records in the Main chain field without endorsing or criticizing.
